We finally made a trip to Ocean City, Maryland's most popular beach city. What a nice break, just the two of us!!!
The car ride there took 4 hours thanks to the toll road leading up to the bay bridge:
However, the way back only took 3 hours and we still had the perfect amount of sun, water, and food time to enjoy ourselves and still make it back to play board games with friends at night.
They have a fun boardwalk with plenty of ice cream and greasy beach food!
I love this picture. Later on he got an earful of sand from a wave much bigger than this. We had so much fun in the waves and I haven't laughed so much so hard in a while.
First time in the Atlantic ocean! (we went to Florida for choir tour in high school, but I didn't even stick my feet in when we went to the beach... what a weirdo!!) I am happy to report that it is much warmer than the water in California.
HALF of Steve's ginormous Philly Cheese Steak sandwich. Anyone have any recommendations for what to eat at Ocean City? The food was fine, but we weren't super impressed. Thankfully the ice cream made up for it :)
And what would a day at the beach be without a painted statue man collecting money for who knows what?

It wasn't nearly as crowded as I had thought, the weather was beautiful, and we will definitely come back again!

Yeah... the bay bridge is always awful.
Did you go see Assateague island? I think that's just about my favorite thing near Ocean City, really, but I have to warn you, I'm in the minority in thinking so.
Assateague Island is a breakwater island just south of OC, and it's home to a whole herd of wild horses. When we camped there two years ago, we actually had to wait for the horses to get out of our campsite before we could set up the tents. The beach is also much less crowded.
BUT
Since there's not a lot of people, and a lot of wild animals, and a rather soggy island, Assateague is just TEEMING with biting insects. Bug repellant will save you from most of the mosquitos at night, and the ocean breeze gets rid of a lot of things, but the islands horseflies will follow you to the beach, waiting for the bug spray to wash off.
I guess I just thought the horses/wild nature of the island were worth the bugs.
Heather!!! I wish I had known you were going to the beach! I totally would have had suggestions for you - that's where my family vacations every year since before I was born!!!!
I hope you enjoyed it. Next time let me know and I'll totally fill you in on the hot spots. By the way, how was the cheese steak? Ocean City is a little far from Philly to get a good one, but depending on where you went it was probably pretty close...
