I'm just a freshman

Last night I was laying in bed, feeling particularly exhausted. I thought to myself:  How can I possibly handle having more children (at some point in the very far future :) ) when I can't handle one?! I had a migraine, a messy apartment, and lots of un-done responsiblities for work and church. And it seems like it's been that way now for a few months (besides the migraine). I finally came to this conclusion: Being a first time mom must be like being a freshman.

Think back to your freshman year of college. Most likely you didn't know how to study, you were an extremely distracted by everything while trying to do homework, and you were amazed you made it through your first semester alive.

My first experience with a college class was definitely a nightmare. I was taking an online astronomy class during one of my high school summers and I saved 75% of the classwork until the day before the class ended. One of those "work at your own pace" classes- haha! I cried and told my mom that I would take the F and that I absolutely couldn't do it. Somehow, I managed to finish and even got an okay grade, but it was one of the worst experiences of my life. Many of the experiences from my actual freshman year were equally difficult.
Dead tired after first freshman year cleaning check in the dorms.

Fast forward a few years to writing a master's thesis. Another one of the worst experiences of my life. But hey, I did it! If I had told my freshman self that I needed to write a thesis it would have been like climbing Mount Everest in flip flops. Luckily by the time I needed to do it I had acquired some sturdy hiking boots (more knowledge), a good guide (a thesis advisor), and stronger muscles (better researching and writing skills).

To all of you who are further on the path, I'm sure my mountains seem like pebbles. I'm sure I'll look back and think so too. But for now I am just a "freshman" and so some little things are hard. Luckily, there are such things as naps and sometimes I even get to take them. Which is why I'm feeling 50 times better today than yesterday. I'm thankful for this journey and love my sweet little boy even though he exhausts me.

3 month résumé

Seth has passed his 3 month mark and is well on his way to 4 months old. He is a happy baby and we LOVE him!

Here's a sampling of Seth at 3 months old. Sorry, I didn't try as diligently this month to get smiling pictures. He smiles all the time, but they're still hard to catch on camera.

He loves his thumb and the two first finger on his right hand.

But he's not picky- the whole fist is fun too.

He loves sitting in here so he can see what mom and dad are up to.

He also loves his monkey-blankie (don't worry- he wasn't sleeping in the bed- just hanging out after he woke up).

Ah ha! a smile :)

He knows how to grab his toys!

He likes to eat them too.

And sometimes he just likes to sit and chill with his chubby legs.
This movie shows by far the best part of this month:

And for a list of milestones:
  • Eats every 2 hours
  • Goes to bed at 7 pm and only wakes up to eat at 4 or 4:30 am
  • Takes 2-4 naps a day
  • Grabs toys with increasing skill and often brings them to his mouth
  • Likes "sitting up"- aka leaning in a sitting position against things
  • Getting better at lifting head during tummy time, but he still only likes tummy time for 5-10 minutes at a time
  • Coos, goos, and squeals all day long
  • Falls asleep on his own at night after 10-20 minutes of fussiness
  • Sleeps in a bassinet in his OWN room (we'll move to the crib soon)
  • Smiles at mom and dad when he sees us
  • Twists his body to look around when lying down
  • Splashes like crazy during most baths
  • Wears 3-6 month clothes
